Mark 4:34
Mark 4:3434He did not tell them anything without using a parable. But privately He explained everything to His own disciples.
is sometimes invoked by JW publications to defend the Watchtower's gradual-disclosure approach — "Even Jesus taught in parables, and not everyone could understand everything at once. The faithful slave provides spiritual food at the proper time." The verse is read as authorising selective revelation of doctrinal content based on the receiver's readiness.
Read the verse carefully. Jesus did teach in illustrations publicly, and he explained them privately to his disciples — but the explanations were given freely, not withheld until trust had been built. There was no "first you believe and then I tell you what is required" structure. Pair with ("I have spoken nothing in secret"), (Paul not "holding back" anything profitable), and (Paul declaring "all the counsel of God"). The Watchtower's gradual-disclosure approach — where shunning, blood policy, Armageddon-destruction-of-non-JWs, and the full weight of Governing Body authority are introduced progressively over months of Bible study — is structurally different from Jesus's pattern of public teaching with private elaboration. Jesus's parables were public; his explanations were available. The Watchtower's commitments are systematically obscured at the door for strategic reasons.
