Mark 10:29
Mark 10:2929“Truly I tell you,” Jesus replied, “no one who has left home or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields for My sake and for the gospel
JWs read as Jesus' affirmation that those who sacrifice family ties and material possessions for "the good news" will be rewarded — and naturally apply this within the Watchtower framework where "the good news" is identified with the message preached by Jehovah's organisation. Witnesses who have left worldly relatives, declined family pressure to abandon the faith, or relocated for service take comfort in the verse's promised reimbursement.
records Jesus' promise to those cut off from family for his sake and the gospel's: "no one has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields for my sake and for the sake of the good news." The criterion is "for my sake" — for Christ himself, not for any particular religious organisation. The next verse (10:30) names the reimbursement: a hundredfold now in this period of time, plus everlasting life in the coming age. Pair this verse with (the parallel promise) and (Jesus' own statement that he came to bring division). On the doorstep, especially with a JW privately wavering or an ex-JW grieving family loss, this verse can be read carefully and the question asked gently: a Witness who leaves the Kingdom Hall in order to follow Christ — even where that costs family — meets Jesus' criterion. The verse cannot be reread to mean "for the sake of organisational membership." Christ promised the hundredfold to those who let everything go for him, and his promise is not retracted by an institution's policy.
