Mark 1:25

NT Gospels
Mark 1:25
25But Jesus rebuked the spirit. “Be silent!” He said. “Come out of him!”

JW Usage

receives little JW commentary. The verse is read as a routine demonstration of Jesus's authority over demons, consistent with his role as Jehovah's appointed Messianic King. Because the JW system identifies Jesus with Michael the archangel, the verse poses no obvious difficulty — an archangel could plausibly command lesser spirit beings. The contrast with Jude 9 (Michael deferring to Jehovah's authority when disputing with the devil) is not engaged.

Protestant Usage

Pair with Jude 9. When Michael — the highest archangel in the JW framework — disputes with the devil, he says "the Lord rebuke you" rather than rebuking him directly. Michael appeals to higher authority. Jesus rebukes demons in his own name with his own word. The contrast is not between two beings of similar rank exercising similar authority — it is between an agent who redirects to higher authority (Michael) and a sender who acts in his own (Jesus). Pair also with ("to which of the angels did God ever say, 'You are my Son, today I have begotten you'?"). The whole of Hebrews 1 is built on the contrast between the Son and the angels — the Son is above every angel, including the highest. If Jesus were Michael, Hebrews 1 contradicts itself.
