# Luke 1:42

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> In a loud voice she exclaimed, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb!

## NWT Wording of the Key Phrase

- NWT (2013 revision): "and loudly cried out: 'Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruitage of your womb!'"

## JW Usage

Luke 1:42 receives little JW commentary. Where it does appear, it is read as Elizabeth offering ordinary congratulations on a blessed pregnancy, with the phrase "blessed are you among women" treated as a Hebrew idiom of high regard rather than as a prophetic recognition of who Mary's child is. Watchtower publications avoid lingering on the verse because the Spirit- authenticated confession that immediately follows in v. 43 ("the mother of my Lord") creates Christological pressure the unitarian framework cannot easily release.

## Protestant Usage

Read v. 42 with v. 41 (Elizabeth filled with the Holy Spirit) and v. 43 (the mother of my Lord) as a single prophetic exclamation. Mary's blessedness here is the foundation for her Magnificat in v. 48 ("from now on all generations will declare me happy") and for the Protestant honour of Mary as the chosen vessel of the Incarnation. Protestants do not pray to Mary, do not believe in her perpetual virginity, the Immaculate Conception, or the Assumption — but Scripture itself calls her blessed, and the reason it does is the identity of the child she carries. Pair with Galatians 4:4 ("born of a woman, born under the law") — Mary is honoured because her son is the Son.

## Arguments Using This Verse

- [Theotokos Is About Jesus, Not About Mary](https://jw-apologetics.app/arguments/mary-theotokos-christological-fence.md) — Luke 1:43 / John 1:14 / Colossians 2:9 [Deity of Christ]
