# John 8:36

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.

## NWT Wording of the Key Phrase

- NWT (2013 revision): "So if the Son sets you free, you will be truly free."

## JW Usage

Understood as freedom from sin and death made possible by Christ's ransom, received by those who accept it and live accordingly. In Watchtower framing the freedom is real but conditional — sustained through faithfulness, meeting attendance and the ministry.

## Protestant Usage

Two words carry it: truly free. Not conditionally, not provisionally — truly, and by the Son's own action. This is the payoff of the passage that began at verse 31. Remain in my word, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free. Who is the truth? Jesus says at John 14:6 that he is. Who does the freeing? Verse 36 says the Son does. The chapter poses and answers its own question, and the answer is a person rather than an institution or a body of doctrine. That has a pastoral edge worth using. A Witness carrying the weight of never being quite certain they have done enough is being offered something different here — freedom conferred by someone else, and described as real. It pairs with Romans 4:8, where the man is happy because his sin is not counted, and with Ephesians 2:8-9 in their own Bible, where the whole thing is a gift and not from works. Ask kindly what "truly free" would mean if it could be lost by falling behind. Compare John 8:31, Romans 4:8, Romans 6:11.
