# John 8:32

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

## NWT Wording of the Key Phrase

- NWT (2013 revision): "and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."

## JW Usage

The Watchtower deploys this verse for "the Truth" — the organisation's preferred name for itself. To find the truth that sets you free is to find Jehovah's organisation. To leave the organisation is to leave the truth. Critically-toned outside sources are labelled "apostate material" and presented as spiritually contaminated, not because the verse demands a closed information loop but because the equation "Watchtower = the truth" lets that conclusion follow.

## Protestant Usage

Truth has nothing to fear from examination. The Bereans in Acts 17:11 were called "noble-minded" because they "carefully examined the Scriptures daily to see whether these things were so" — and what they were testing was the preaching of an inspired apostle. If apostolic teaching could be tested, an organisation that admits it is "neither inspired nor infallible" can certainly be tested. The Watchtower simultaneously concedes its fallibility and forbids consultation of any source that might reveal its errors. That is not a mark of truth — it is the hallmark of information control. The truth Jesus promises here is found by obeying him personally (verse 31, "if you remain in my word"), not by remaining inside an information environment that one organisation curates.
