JW Usage

Read as conditioning discipleship on continued obedience — remaining in Jesus' word means holding to accurate teaching and staying with Jehovah's arrangement. Verse 32's "the truth will set you free" is heard through the organisation's use of "the Truth" as a name for itself, so freedom becomes something found by coming into the organisation.

Protestant Usage

Notice what a disciple is told to remain in: my word. Not a body of teaching held by a group, not an institution — the word of a person, who is speaking in the first person throughout. Then verse 32 says the truth will set you free, and verse 36 names who does the freeing: if the Son sets you free, you will be truly free. The chapter's own answer to "what is the truth that frees?" is a person, not a system. That matches , where Jesus says he is the truth, and and 16:13, where the Spirit is the Spirit of truth. This is a gentle vocabulary conversation, not a confrontation. When a Witness says they came into the Truth, or that a relative left the Truth, ask what the word means in these verses. Reading through in one go usually does the work, because the passage sets the question up and answers it four verses later. Compare , , .
