# John 6:66

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> From that time on many of His disciples turned back and no longer walked with Him.

## NWT Wording of the Key Phrase

- NWT (2013 revision): "Because of this, many of his disciples went off to the things behind and would no longer walk with him."

## JW Usage

When a Witness is quietly questioning, elders and older Witnesses often warn against "drawing back" — drifting away from the organisation, neglecting meetings, or considering apostate material. John 6:66 is sometimes used to frame doubt itself as the first step out of "the truth," with the unspoken implication that those who turn back will share the fate of the disciples who walked away from Jesus.

## Protestant Usage

Read the verse with the next two and the framing flips. Many of Jesus' followers turned back because his teaching about sovereign drawing (verse 65) and his demand for total dependence on him as the bread of life (verses 53-58) was too much for them. Then Jesus turns to the Twelve and asks: "You do not want to leave too, do you?" The decisive question is not "will you stay loyal to a movement?" but "will you stay with Jesus?" The "drawing back" in this chapter is people who could not bring themselves to rest on Christ alone for life. Modern Witnesses leaving the organisation in order to come more directly to Christ are walking the opposite direction from the disciples in 6:66 — they are staying *with* Jesus while leaving an institution.

## NWT Issue

The NWT renders eis ta opisō literally as "went off to the things behind" — an awkward word-for-word translation that mainstream English versions render naturally as "turned back" or "no longer followed him." The clumsiness is translational rather than doctrinal; the meaning is preserved.

## Arguments Using This Verse

- [To Whom Shall We Go? — Peter Was Answering a Person, Not an Organisation](https://jw-apologetics.app/arguments/john6-68-words-of-eternal-life.md) — John 6:68 is a confession of Christ, not a defence of the Watchtower [Authority]
