# John 6:60

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> On hearing it, many of His disciples said, “This is a difficult teaching. Who can accept it?”

## JW Usage

The Watchtower cites John 6:60 to normalise the difficulty of its own teachings. When prospective members or Bible students encounter controversial doctrines — blood transfusion refusal, shunning, the destruction of all non-JWs at Armageddon — the organisation frames resistance as analogous to the disciples who found Jesus' teaching "shocking." The implication is that truth is inherently difficult, and those who reject Watchtower teaching are like the disciples who walked away in John 6:66. This framing discourages critical examination by conflating organisational doctrine with Jesus' own words.

## Protestant Usage

The irony of the Watchtower's appeal to John 6:60 is striking. Jesus told the hard truth upfront — publicly, to everyone, with nothing concealed. He did not introduce his most demanding teaching gradually after months of rapport-building. When many disciples left, Jesus let them go (John 6:66-67) rather than softening or hiding the message. The Watchtower does the opposite: its most controversial requirements (shunning of former members, blood policy, 1914 invisible return, Armageddon destruction of outsiders) are introduced only after a prospective member has invested months of study and formed social bonds within the congregation. This is doctrinal concealment, not Christlike transparency. Paul affirmed the same openness in Acts 20:20 — "I did not hold back from telling you any of the things that were profitable" — and in 2 Corinthians 4:2 — "by making the truth manifest." A truth that must be hidden to be accepted is not behaving like truth.
