# John 6:46

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> not that anyone has seen the Father except the One who is from God; only He has seen the Father.

## NWT Wording of the Key Phrase

- NWT (2013 revision): "Not that any man has seen the Father, except the one who is from God; this one has seen the Father."

## JW Usage

Witnesses read this verse as straightforward — Jesus has a unique vantage point because he has been with God in heaven before his earthly mission, but the verse does not require him to be God. The "one who is from God" is interpreted as Michael the Archangel, sent by Jehovah, who has seen the Father in his pre-human existence as the highest creature.

## Protestant Usage

Lay this verse alongside Exodus 6:2-3 (God appeared to the patriarchs) and John 1:18 (no one has ever seen God). The chain is unbreakable: God was seen in the Old Testament; the Father has never been seen; therefore the one seen was the Son. Verse 46 is decisive — "Not that any man has seen the Father, except the one who is from God; this one has seen the Father." If only the one who is from God has seen the Father, every Old Testament appearance of God must be an appearance of the Son. That is not a created angel relaying a message; that is the second person of the Godhead making the Father known. The same Jesus who descended from heaven in 6:38 is the "one who is from God" in 6:46 — the only person who could speak about heavenly things with first-hand authority.

## Arguments Using This Verse

- [Who Appeared to Abraham?](https://jw-apologetics.app/arguments/ot-christophany.md) — If no one has seen the Father, the OT appearances were Christ [Deity of Christ]
- [The Prologue Has Two Bookends — Read John 1:18 Before You Argue About John 1:1](https://jw-apologetics.app/arguments/john1-1-and-1-18-inclusio.md) — John 1:1 and 1:18 — the opening and closing of John's prologue say the same three things [Deity of Christ]
