John 4:14

NT Gospels
John 4:14
14But whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a fount of water springing up to eternal life.”
Read in NWT ↗
JW Usage

Witnesses read this as the offer of "everlasting life" in the Watchtower's preferred sense — endless duration. For the great crowd, that life takes the form of unending existence on a restored paradise earth. For the 144,000, it takes the form of immortal heavenly life. The verse is read as endorsing the two-class destination scheme rather than as undermining it.

Protestant Usage

Notice that Jesus speaks of one gift, given to "whoever," that becomes "in him a spring of water bubbling up to impart everlasting life." There is no second class of recipients receiving a lesser version on a lower tier. The water becomes a spring inside the believer — Jesus' image is internal indwelling, not geographical destination. Compare — "let anyone thirsting come; let anyone who wishes take life's water free." The invitation in the last chapter of the Bible is the same as the invitation here in the Gospel: one gift, anyone who wishes, free. The Watchtower's two-tier system divides what Scripture joins.

NWT Issue

The NWT consistently substitutes "everlasting" for "eternal" in rendering aiōnios. Standard English versions retain "eternal" because aiōnios carries qualitative weight (pertaining to the age to come, sharing the life of God) rather than mere temporal duration. The substitution is not strictly inaccurate, but it flattens a rich biblical concept into a duration-only equivalent — a fit for a theology that frames future life as unending earthly existence rather than as participation in the divine life that is in Christ.
