John 3:7
John 3:77Do not be amazed that I said, ‘You must be born again.’
The Watchtower limits the new birth to the 144,000 anointed Christians. Witnesses with an earthly hope are not expected to be born again — they will inherit a restored paradise earth without needing the spiritual rebirth Jesus describes. Nicodemus is read as a potential member of the anointed class, so Jesus' words to him do not bind the great crowd today.
Notice the NWT preserves the plural — "You people must be born again." Jesus is not addressing one Pharisee about a special class; he is correcting the assumption that the new birth is optional or limited to a few. says everyone (pas) who exercises faith that Jesus is the Christ has been born from God. says God's mercy gave us "a new birth" — every believer, not a select 144,000. If the new birth is the precondition for entering the kingdom (verse 5), and most Witnesses are taught they have not been born again, what does Jesus' own statement say about them? Press the question gently — the realisation "I have not been born again" can be the unsettling moment that opens the conversation.
