# John 3:6

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> Flesh is born of flesh, but spirit is born of the Spirit.

## NWT Wording of the Key Phrase

- NWT (2013 revision): "What has been born from the flesh is flesh, and what has been born from the spirit is spirit."

## JW Usage

Witnesses understand 3:6 as a description of God's impersonal active force operating on a person to make them spiritually minded, paralleling Watchtower teaching that the holy spirit acts on people the way wind or electricity does — without consciousness or personhood. The flesh-versus-spirit contrast is read as natural-disposition versus spiritual-disposition rather than as a contrast between unregenerate humanity and the regenerating work of the Spirit himself.

## Protestant Usage

Paul develops this verse's logic in 1 Corinthians 2:14: the natural (psychikos) person cannot accept the things of the Spirit because they are spiritually discerned. A man who has not been born of the Spirit is, by Jesus' own classification, still flesh — and flesh cannot research its way into spiritual truth. This inverts the JW evangelistic premise that an unregenerate seeker can study the publications, weigh the evidence, and decide for themselves. Jesus says spiritual capacity is the result of the new birth, not its precondition. Ask gently: "If a man is flesh until he is born of the Spirit, what does he contribute to his own regeneration?"

## NWT Issue

The NWT renders pneuma in lowercase here ("what has been born from the spirit is spirit") because Watchtower theology classifies the Holy Spirit as God's impersonal active force, not a divine person. The grammatical choice prevents the reader from encountering the verse as a reference to the Spirit's personal regenerating work. Even so, three verses later (3:8) the same pneuma "blows where it wants to" — a verb of personal volition that the lowercase typography cannot fully obscure.
