John 3:36
John 3:3636Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life. Whoever rejects the Son will not see life. Instead, the wrath of God remains on him.”
Read as showing that everlasting life depends on faith in the Son expressed through obedience — which in Watchtower teaching means obedience to Jehovah's requirements as the organisation sets them out. The wrath of God remaining is understood as the default state of those outside the arrangement, resolved by everlasting destruction rather than conscious punishment.
The tense is the striking thing. The one who exercises faith in the Son HAS everlasting life — present, already, not pending assessment. Not will have it if he keeps up. Has it. And the wrath REMAINS on the one who disobeys — it is the condition already in place, not a penalty added later. So the verse describes two present states, both determined by the response to the Son. That cuts against a framework in which everlasting life is a prize at the end of a sustained performance. If a person has it now, the question of whether they will earn it does not arise in the same way. says the same thing outright: these things are written so that you may know you have everlasting life. There is also a note on the wrath side that is worth being honest about — John does not soften it, and neither should we. The choice the verse presents is real. But the offer in the first half is present-tense and unconditional in its grammar, and that is what most Witnesses have never been shown. Compare , , .
