John 3:18

NT Gospels
John 3:18
18Whoever believes in Him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe has already been condemned, because he has not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son.

JW Usage

Read as establishing that faith in Jesus is necessary, understood within the Watchtower's fuller requirement: accurate knowledge of Jehovah, faith in the ransom, dedication, baptism as one of Jehovah's Witnesses, and continued faithfulness. "Only-begotten" is taken as further evidence that the Son was produced by the Father.

Protestant Usage

On "only-begotten": the Greek word is monogenes, from monos and genos — only, and kind or class. It means unique, one of a kind, and it is not built from the verb "to beget." calls Isaac Abraham's monogenes son even though Abraham had Ishmael. Isaac was not Abraham's only offspring; he was the unique, promised one. Modern translations render it "one and only" for that reason. On the main clause: notice what determines the outcome. Not achievement, not accumulated obedience — faith in him, or its absence. Whoever exercises faith is not to be judged. That is where the dying-thief question belongs. The man beside Jesus had no baptism, no record of service, no time to prove anything. He said "remember me when you come into your kingdom," and Jesus answered "today you will be with me in paradise." Ask gently: if a dying person cannot be saved by the message being brought to your door, is it good news? A gospel that requires time cannot be given to someone who has none. Compare , , .
