# John 3:16

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that everyone who believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.

## JW Usage

JWs use this verse frequently but redefine key terms. "Only-begotten" (monogenes) is read as proof that Jesus was literally produced or brought forth by Jehovah — he had a beginning as God's first creation. "Exercising faith" (the NWT rendering of pisteuo) is interpreted as an ongoing activity requiring works: preaching, meeting attendance, organisational loyalty, and endurance to the end. Salvation is thus conditional on sustained performance, not a settled trust in Christ.

## Protestant Usage

The Greek monogenes means "one of a kind" or "unique" (monos + genos), not "only begotten" (which would require gennao). Hebrews 11:17 calls Isaac monogenes even though Abraham had other sons — the word denotes uniqueness, not origin. The standard Greek verb pisteuo means "believe" or "trust" — a relational posture, not an activity programme. Modern translations render it "whoever believes in him." The verse presents salvation as arising from God's love and received through trust: God loved, God gave, the believer trusts, the believer has eternal life. The structure leaves no room for organisational mediation or performance-based qualification. Combined with John 5:24 ("has passed over from death to life") and 1 John 5:13 ("so that you may know that you have eternal life"), the gospel offer is present-tense possession, not a future hope contingent on endurance.

## NWT Issue

The NWT renders pisteuo (pisteuō, "believe/trust") as "exercising faith" — subtly converting simple trust into an ongoing activity requiring effort. This rendering appears across key salvation passages (John 3:16, 3:36, 6:40) and supports the Watchtower's works-based soteriology by making faith itself sound like a work.
