NT Gospels

13No one has ascended into heaven except the One who descended from heaven—the Son of Man.

JW Usage

The Watchtower deploys ("no one has ascended into heaven except the one who descended from heaven, the Son of Man") as a universal denial that any human being has gone to heaven. Reasoning From the Scriptures (pp. 312-317) pairs it with (Elijah taken into the sky) to argue that Elijah was merely transported through the atmosphere, not taken to heaven proper. The verse is also used to reinforce the two-class salvation model: if no human ascended to heaven before Jesus, then the earthly hope — not a heavenly one — is the default destiny for the majority of believers. It thereby supports the teaching that only the 144,000 anointed receive heavenly life.

Protestant Usage

Protestants read in its immediate context — Jesus is answering Nicodemus about revelatory authority. "No one has ascended into heaven except the one who descended from heaven" is a claim to exclusive qualification: only Jesus has come down from heaven and can therefore reveal heavenly things. The echo is ("Who has ascended to heaven and come down?"), a rhetorical question about who has access to divine knowledge. The verse is not a historical census of past bodily translations; if it were, it would contradict , , and ("Enoch was transferred so as not to see death") within the same canon. The authority-claim reading preserves canonical harmony; the blanket-denial reading destroys it. In the argument, further establishes Jesus' heavenly origin — "the second man is from heaven" — pointing to his pre-existence, not limiting who may eventually share in heavenly life through him.
