# John 20:29

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> Jesus said to him, “Because you have seen Me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”

## NWT Wording of the Key Phrase

- NWT (2013 revision): "Jesus said to him: "Because you have seen me, have you believed? Happy are those who have not seen and yet believe.""

## JW Usage

The Watchtower reads Thomas' words in the previous verse as an exclamation of astonishment rather than an address to Jesus — the equivalent of a surprised cry directed to God in heaven. On that reading Jesus' reply here is simply about faith and sight, and carries no endorsement of anything Thomas said about him.

## Protestant Usage

Jesus' reply is the evidence, which is why this verse matters as much as verse 28. Thomas has just said "my Lord and my God." If that were a blasphemous confusion — a creature being addressed as God — this is the moment for correction. Instead Jesus commends him: because you have seen me, have you believed? Happy are those who have not seen and yet believe. The faith is affirmed, and what Thomas said is the content of that faith. Compare how Scripture handles the alternative. At Revelation 22:8-9 John falls down before an angel and is told sharply to stop and worship God instead. At Acts 14:14-15 Paul and Barnabas tear their clothes when Lystra tries to sacrifice to them. Creatures who are honoured wrongly correct it immediately. And note the NWT's own wording in verse 28: "In answer Thomas said to him." In answer — a reply to Jesus' invitation, not an outburst. Said to him — addressed to Jesus, not about him. Then read verse 31, where John states his purpose in writing. Thomas' confession is the climax the whole Gospel has been building toward. Compare John 4:23, John 17:23.
