Witnesses see this verse as the start of Jesus' miraculous ministry, fitting the Watchtower's broader pattern of identifying Jesus as God's chosen agent — the one through whom Jehovah works while remaining hierarchically subordinate. The miracle is attributed to Jesus' role as Jehovah's instrument rather than to his own divine nature.

Protestant Usage

This verse closes the Cana episode and decides how to read verse 4. Jesus performs the miracle. He turns the water into wine (verses 8-10). If his words to Mary in verse 4 were a flat rejection, the miracle would never have happened — and yet here it is, in the same paragraph, at the request his mother brought to him. The text itself rules out the literal-rejection reading of verse 4 and confirms what the Hebrew idiom signalled: Jesus' messianic timing is not set by his mother's social cue, but his honour for her is intact and the petition lands. Mary models faithful disciple-mother — bringing her concerns to her son and trusting him to act in his own way and his own time.
