John 2:5
John 2:55His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever He tells you.”
This verse rarely surfaces independently in JW teaching. When it does, Mary's instruction "Do whatever he tells you" is read as ordinary maternal direction to the servants and a general endorsement of obedience to Jesus' word — useful for emphasising that obedience to Christ is the proper Christian posture. The verse is not pressed for what it reveals about Jesus' relationship to Mary or about the meaning of his words to her in verse 4.
Read with verse 4, this is the decisive contextual move. If verse 4 were a flat rejection of his mother, Mary would not turn immediately to the servants and tell them to do whatever Jesus says — and she certainly would not be obeyed. Mary's confidence is the textual proof that "Woman, why is that of concern to me and to you" was not a dismissal. It was the Hebrew idiom for non-alignment of agenda and timing. Mary heard it for what it was, redirected the servants, and Jesus performed the miracle. The Reformation kept this same reading: Mary is honoured as a faithful disciple ("from now on all generations will call me blessed," ) without being elevated as a mediator. Her posture here — pointing the servants to her son and standing back — is the model.
