John 2:16
John 2:1616To those selling doves He said, “Get these out of here! How dare you turn My Father’s house into a marketplace!”
Witnesses read the temple-cleansing as Jesus' zeal for proper worship at his Father's house, fitting the Watchtower's emphasis on undefiled worship at Kingdom Halls and at the annual Memorial. The phrase "my Father's house" is not usually pressed for what it reveals about Jesus' filial consciousness or about the meaning of "house" in John's broader vocabulary.
Jesus calls the temple "my Father's house" — and in he picks the same image up to describe where he is going: "in the house of my Father there are many dwelling places." The Father's house is not a hotel with a limited room-count; it is the place of God's dwelling, and the prepared place is being where Jesus is. John 2 plants the image; John 14 expands it; brings it home — "the dwelling place of God is with man, and he will dwell with them." Heaven, in John's vocabulary, is the presence of God with his people, not a gated destination for 144,000. Every believer who is indwelt by the Spirit () already has the down-payment of that dwelling.
