# John 19:7

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> “We have a law,” answered the Jews, “and according to that law He must die, because He declared Himself to be the Son of God.”

## NWT Wording of the Key Phrase

- NWT (2013 revision): "We have a law, and according to the law he ought to die, because he made himself God's son."

## JW Usage

Witnesses read this verse as evidence the Jewish leaders misunderstood Jesus. "Son of God" — in the JW reading — means no more than "created being highly favoured by God," like Adam or the angels in Job. The Jews' demand for the death penalty is treated as a misapplication of the Mosaic law to a claim Jesus did not actually make.

## Protestant Usage

Watch the Jewish leaders carefully. They are experts in the Hebrew scriptures. They have heard Jesus claim God as his "own" Father (John 5:18 — "making himself equal with God"). They have heard him say "I and the Father are one" (John 10:30) and watched him receive worship without correcting it. Now, on the threshold of execution, they cite their law: "according to the law he ought to die, because he made himself God's Son." Under Jewish law, claiming to be a created favoured being is not a capital offence. Claiming to share the divine identity is. The hostile witnesses are reading Jesus' "Son of God" claim exactly as Trinitarians read it — and Jesus, asked under oath at the Sanhedrin trial (Mark 14:62), confirms it. The death sentence is the proof that the title was understood as a deity claim by the people in the room.

## NWT Issue

The NWT renders huion theou with a lowercase "son" — "God's son" — where most English versions render "the Son of God" with the divine title capitalised. The lowercase choice quietly deflects the deity weight the Jewish leaders themselves recognised. Even the NWT's own translation of John 1:34 and John 1:49 capitalises "Son of God"; the inconsistency at 19:7 is theologically motivated, softening exactly the verse where the Jewish leaders identify the deity claim as a capital offence.
