JWs treat as a straightforward fulfilment notice — the Roman soldiers do not break Jesus' legs, fulfilling / / . The link to the Passover lamb supports the Watchtower's "ransom" theology: Jesus is the antitypical Passover lamb, the perfect human sacrifice corresponding to Adam.

Protestant Usage

is the apostle's editorial seam joining the crucifixion to Old Testament prophecy. "These things took place for the scripture to be fulfilled" introduces a paired citation: verse 36 quotes the unbroken-bones requirement of the Passover lamb, and verse 37 quotes ("they will look to the one whom they pierced"). Read together, the two scriptures load the cross with two layers of Old Testament identity: Jesus is the Passover lamb (sacrificial), and Jesus is the pierced one of Zechariah 12 (where the speaker is Yahweh and the one pierced shares Yahweh's identity). The unbroken bones secure the lamb-typology; verse 37 secures the Yahweh-identity. John uses this paired citation deliberately — the cross is not merely a faithful creature obeying a commandment but the moment when the Old Testament's pierced Jehovah arrives in person.
