# John 19:30

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> When Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished.” And bowing His head, He yielded up His spirit.

## JW Usage

The NWT renders tetelestai as "It has been accomplished." Jehovah's Witnesses argue this means Jesus completed his earthly assignment — proving Satan a liar, upholding Jehovah's sovereignty, and providing a ransom that makes salvation possible. However, individuals must still meet Jehovah's requirements to benefit from the ransom: acquiring knowledge, obeying God's laws, associating with his organisation, and participating in the preaching work. The accomplishment opens the door; walking through requires ongoing effort.

## Protestant Usage

The Greek tetelestai is a perfect tense verb meaning "it has been completed with permanent results." Jesus' declaration at the cross signals the completion of the atoning work — not merely the end of his earthly assignment but the finishing of salvation itself. Hebrews 10:11-12 confirms the significance: Old Testament priests stood because their work was never done; Jesus "sat down at the right hand of God" because his work is finished. Hebrews 10:14 says his one offering "has made those who are being sanctified perfect for all time." At the moment of Jesus' death, the temple curtain was "torn in two from top to bottom" (Matthew 27:51) — God himself ripped open the barrier. Direct access to God is through Christ alone, not through a priestly class or an organisation. If the atonement is finished and believers are made perfect for all time, adding organisational requirements cannot improve on "perfect for all time" — it can only deny the sufficiency of what was accomplished on the cross.
