John 17:22
John 17:2222I have given them the glory You gave Me, so that they may be one as We are one—
Witnesses read the disciples' shared glory as the privilege of belonging to Jehovah's organisation and bearing his message — a shared honour granted by association rather than the kind of glory that belongs to God by nature. The unity is taken to be a unity of mission: everyone bearing the same testimony under the same earthly direction.
Jesus says "the glory that you have given me, I have given them." This is the glory the eternal Son had with the Father before the world was (compare verse 5). It is given to disciples, not in the sense that they become divine, but in the sense that they are caught up into the life of God himself — the same relational unity the Father and Son share is the pattern of unity Jesus prays into being for them. The verse only makes sense if the Son's unity with the Father is real, mutual, and substantive enough to be the model for the unity of the church. A representative does not share the king's glory the way the king's son does.
