# John 16:8

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> And when He comes, He will convict the world in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment:

## NWT Wording of the Key Phrase

- NWT (2013 revision): "And when that one comes, he will give the world convincing evidence concerning sin and concerning righteousness and concerning judgment:"

## JW Usage

The Watchtower teaches that the holy spirit is God's "active force" — an impersonal energy comparable to electricity or wind, not a divine person. The work described in John 16:8 is read as the operation of that force on people's consciences, not as the activity of a personal agent who can be addressed, grieved, lied to, or honoured. The NWT lowercases "holy spirit" throughout to reinforce this reading.

## Protestant Usage

Notice what the NWT preserves: "when that one comes, he will give the world convincing evidence." The Greek pronoun is ekeinos, the masculine demonstrative — and it is grammatically remarkable here because the noun "spirit" (pneuma) is neuter in Greek. By the rules of Greek grammar, the natural pronoun would be neuter; Jesus deliberately uses the masculine. The same pattern runs through John 14:26, 15:26, and 16:13. Even the NWT's lowercase typography cannot remove the masculine pronouns from the Greek text. Convicting the world of sin, righteousness, and judgment is personal work — only persons convict, teach, guide, and speak. An impersonal active force does not convict anyone of anything. Pair with Acts 5:3-4 (lying to the Spirit is lying to God) and Ephesians 4:30 (the Spirit can be grieved). You do not grieve electricity.

## NWT Issue

The NWT softens elenchō ("convict, prove guilty, expose") to "give convincing evidence" — turning a forensic verdict into a rhetorical demonstration. The change is not strictly mistranslation but it weakens the verse's depiction of the Spirit's personal judicial work. In context the Spirit is doing what only a personal agent can do; the NWT's paraphrase reduces this to presenting evidence the way an impersonal medium might, which fits the active-force pneumatology even where the underlying Greek does not.
