John 14:8
John 14:88Philip said to Him, “Lord, show us the Father, and that will be enough for us.”
Philip's request is read as the puzzled question of a disciple who has not yet grasped Jesus' representational role. The Watchtower reading treats Philip's confusion as the right-shaped confusion: it would in fact be wrong to see the Father in Jesus directly, so Jesus' answer in v.9 is reframed as gentle correction toward a representational view.
Philip's request is the disciples' deepest theological yearning, spoken plainly: "show us the Father, and it is enough for us." If Philip had understood Jesus as merely God's representative, the request would not even make sense — Philip would already have what a representative provides. The request presupposes that Philip wants what only direct vision of God provides. Jesus' answer in v.9 does not say "I cannot give you that." He says "anyone who has seen me has seen the Father." That is the disciple's deepest yearning being granted, not redirected. Pair with ("the exact representation of his very being") and ("all the fullness of the divine quality dwells bodily").
