John 14:18
John 14:1818I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.
Read with — "the world will see me no more, but you will see me" — as the textual basis for the invisible-presence doctrine. Jesus' "I am coming to you" is treated as the model for his future return: discernible to the faithful, invisible to the world. The 1914 invisible parousia is presented as the fulfilment of this passage.
Read verses 18-21 together. "In that day" at v.20 refers to Pentecost onwards, when the Spirit's indwelling becomes the mode of Christ's presence in the believer. , spoken to the same disciples six weeks later by two angels in white, addresses the question of the final return: Jesus will come "in the same manner" as he was seen going — visibly, bodily, with a cloud. cannot be used to override ; the two passages address different windows.
