# John 13:35

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> By this everyone will know that you are My disciples, if you love one another.”

## JW Usage

Jehovah's Witnesses treat John 13:35 as one of their primary identity markers. The Watchtower argues that the love JWs show for fellow Witnesses — international unity, disaster relief within the organisation, refusal of military service — proves they are the true religion. The verse is frequently quoted in doorstep presentations and convention talks as evidence that the organisation uniquely fulfils Jesus' criterion for discipleship. Love, in this framing, is measured by in-group solidarity and organisational uniformity rather than by costly, unconditional care for all people.

## Protestant Usage

Jesus identifies the mark of discipleship as love — not organisational uniformity, not doctrinal compliance, not field-service hours. The "fruit test" of Matthew 7:16-20 must examine the whole harvest, not just three favourable branches chosen by the organisation. Several questions expose the limits of the Watchtower's love claim. First, Matthew 5:46-47 asks whether loving only those who love you back proves anything — even tax collectors do that. Second, when a Witness is disfellowshipped, the love stops: parents are required to shun their own children, and friendships of decades are severed overnight. That is conditional love enforced by institutional threat, not the love Jesus described. Third, the organisation's record on child abuse reporting — 1,006 perpetrators documented by the Australian Royal Commission with zero reports to civil authorities — raises serious questions about whether the organisation's love extends to its most vulnerable members. Paul defines love in 1 Corinthians 13: it does not insist on its own way, it bears all things. Real love survives disagreement; the Watchtower's "unity" is largely maintained by the threat of disfellowshipping.
