John 12:45

NT Gospels
John 12:45
45And whoever sees Me sees the One who sent Me.

JW Usage

Read as agency-Christology — to see Jesus is to see the One who sent him in the sense that an ambassador represents the king. The seeing is metaphorical: Jesus reflects the Father's character without sharing the Father's nature.

Protestant Usage

is the synoptic anticipation of the conversation with Philip. Jesus says seeing him equals seeing the Father — and he does so in a context where Old Testament prohibitions on seeing God remain in force ( — "no one can see me and live"; — "to whom will you liken God?"). No prophet, angel, or agent ever says "seeing me is seeing God." Moses, the highest agent in the Old Testament, never said it; angels in Scripture refuse worship; the apostles redirect glory away from themselves. Only Jesus says seeing him is seeing the Father — because only God can fully reveal God.
