# John 12:45

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> And whoever sees Me sees the One who sent Me.

## NWT Wording of the Key Phrase

- NWT (2013 revision): "And whoever sees me sees also the One who sent me."

## JW Usage

Read as agency-Christology — to see Jesus is to see the One who sent him in the sense that an ambassador represents the king. The seeing is metaphorical: Jesus reflects the Father's character without sharing the Father's nature.

## Protestant Usage

John 12:45 is the synoptic anticipation of the John 14:9 conversation with Philip. Jesus says seeing him equals seeing the Father — and he does so in a context where Old Testament prohibitions on seeing God remain in force (Exodus 33:20 — "no one can see me and live"; Isaiah 40:18 — "to whom will you liken God?"). No prophet, angel, or agent ever says "seeing me is seeing God." Moses, the highest agent in the Old Testament, never said it; angels in Scripture refuse worship; the apostles redirect glory away from themselves. Only Jesus says seeing him is seeing the Father — because only God can fully reveal God.
