John 12:32

NT Gospels
John 12:32
32And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw everyone to Myself.”

JW Usage

Read with the NWT's "all sorts of men" expansion to argue that Christ draws from "every kind" of person — ethnically, socially, vocationally — but not literally everyone. The verse becomes evidence that the drawing is selective by category, fitting the Watchtower's two-tier soteriology (144,000 anointed plus a great crowd).

Protestant Usage

The Greek is pantas — "all," masculine accusative plural — without any qualifier. Standard English translations read "all" or "all people" (KJV/ESV/NASB/NIV). The same Greek verb of drawing (helkuō) appears in ("no one can come to me unless the Father draws him") and is used elsewhere of effectual pulling — fish in a net at , 11. Pair with and the conclusion is that the drawing is real, particular, and effectual: those drawn do come, and those who come are raised on the last day. The "sorts of" insertion at 12:32 is the same restrictive expansion the NWT uses at ("every sort of flesh").

NWT Issue

The Greek pantas is rendered "all sorts of men" rather than the consensus "all people" or "all men." The "sorts of" expansion is one of the well-known recurring NWT modifications to universal-scope language: it appears at (Spirit poured on "every sort of flesh"), at ("all sorts of people"), and at . The cumulative effect is to narrow the New Testament's universal vocabulary into a "various-categories" vocabulary that fits a JW restrictivism on the scope of the gospel and the Spirit.
