# John 11:17

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> When Jesus arrived, He found that Lazarus had already spent four days in the tomb.

## JW Usage

JWs read Lazarus's burial as straightforward narrative detail in the resurrection account. The verse plays no distinctive doctrinal role in JW publications. Where it becomes relevant in apologetic conversation is incidental: it shows the Greek vocabulary the New Testament uses for a literal grave (mnēmeion), which is different from the word for the realm of the dead (Hadēs) — a distinction the Watchtower's blanket "the Grave" rendering of Hadēs erases.

## Protestant Usage

John uses the Greek word mnēmeion — the standard New Testament term for a physical burial place. The same word is used of Joseph of Arimathea's tomb in Matthew 27:60 and the empty tomb on Easter morning in John 20:1, and appears about forty times across the New Testament for a literal grave. The Greek had a separate, distinct word — Hadēs — for the unseen realm of the dead, and the New Testament authors never confused them. The verse matters apologetically as part of the lexical contrast: when the NWT renders both mnēmeion AND Hadēs as "the Grave," it flattens a distinction the Greek text deliberately preserves.

## Arguments Using This Verse

- [Hadēs Is Not the Grave](https://jw-apologetics.app/arguments/hades-the-grave-rendering.md) — Luke 16:23 / Revelation 1:18 — The NWT Collapses Two Greek Words Into One [NWT Translation]
- [A Creature Can Point to Life; Only the Source Can Say 'I Am the Life'](https://jw-apologetics.app/arguments/i-am-the-life.md) — Psalm 36:9 / John 11:25 / John 14:6 / John 5:26 — the source of life is with Jehovah, and Jesus says he is that life [Deity of Christ]
