# John 10:36

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> then what about the One whom the Father sanctified and sent into the world? How then can you accuse Me of blasphemy for stating that I am the Son of God?

## JW Usage

Jehovah's Witnesses emphasise that Jesus said "I am God's Son" — not "I am God." They argue this self-identification as Son distinguishes Jesus from the Father and establishes him as a lesser, created being. Jesus identifies himself as "the one whom the Father sanctified and sent into the world," which JWs read as a commission statement — the Father is the sender and superior, the Son is the subordinate agent. The title "Son of God" is understood as a rank within God's organisation, not an ontological claim to shared deity.

## Protestant Usage

In context, Jesus saying "I am God's Son" is the conclusion of his lesser-to-greater argument. The Jews accused him of making himself God (v. 33); Jesus defends the claim rather than denying it. He identifies himself as "the one whom the Father sanctified and sent into the world" — uniquely set apart and commissioned from heaven. The audience reaction confirms they understood this as a deity claim: they tried to seize him again (v. 39). John 5:18 explicitly states that calling God his own Father was "making himself equal with God." In the first-century Jewish context, "Son of God" was not a lesser title — it was the claim the Jews considered blasphemy punishable by death (John 19:7). Peter's confession of Jesus as "the Son of the living God" (Matthew 16:16) was described by Jesus as a revelation from the Father himself — indicating a truth deeper than mere creaturely status.
