# John 10:27

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> My sheep listen to My voice; I know them, and they follow Me.

## JW Usage

The Watchtower teaches that the "voice" of Jesus in this verse is heard today through the Governing Body and its publications. Listening to Jesus' voice is equated with obeying the faithful and discreet slave. The verse is deployed to reinforce the necessity of the organisational channel: if the sheep must hear a voice, there must be a visible, identifiable source for that voice, and the Watchtower claims to be it. When doubting Witnesses ask hard questions, elders often redirect them to this verse — implying that questioning the organisation means refusing to listen to the shepherd's voice.

## Protestant Usage

Jesus says his sheep listen to his voice — not to an organisation's voice. The grammar is personal and direct: "my sheep," "my voice," "I know them," "they follow me." The pronoun "me" (Greek emoi) is emphatic; the sheep follow Jesus, not a committee. In context, Jesus is distinguishing his true sheep from those who do not believe (John 10:26), and the mark of belonging is hearing and following Christ himself. The New Testament identifies the means by which believers hear Christ: through his preserved Word (2 Timothy 3:16), by the illumination of the Holy Spirit (John 14:26; 16:13), and in the company of fellow believers who can be questioned and corrected (Acts 17:11; Galatians 2:11). This is a distributed, Christ-centred structure — not a single institution claiming the exclusive right to transmit the shepherd's voice. The principle "biblical necessity requires biblical identification" applies: if the Bible required a specific channel for Christ's voice, the Bible would name it. It does not.
