# Joel 2:28

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> And afterward, I will pour out My Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions.

## NWT Wording of the Key Phrase

- NWT (2013 revision): "After that I will pour out my spirit on every sort of flesh, and your sons and your daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, and your young men will see visions."

## JW Usage

Joel's "last days" prophecy is split into two fulfilments: a partial first-century fulfilment at Pentecost, and a greater present-day fulfilment that began in 1914. Peter's categorical statement at Acts 2:16 — "this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel" — is read as "this resembles" or "this initiates" rather than "this fulfils."

## Protestant Usage

Peter does not say "this is like Joel" or "this foreshadows Joel." He says "this is what was spoken through Joel." If the apostles understood themselves to be already in the last days, no later date — 1914 or otherwise — can be the start of those last days. Pair Joel 2:28 with the rest of the New Testament's first-century "last days" witnesses: Hebrews 1:2, 1 John 2:18, 1 Peter 1:20, Hebrews 9:26, 1 Corinthians 10:11, James 5:3. Six independent New Testament texts place the last days in the first century. The 1914 chronology requires that Peter, John, Paul, and the writer of Hebrews were all wrong about when their own age stood in redemptive history.

## NWT Issue

The NWT renders kol-basar — literally "all flesh" — as "every sort of flesh." Standard English translations read "all flesh" (KJV, ESV, NASB) or "all people" (NIV). The "every sort of" expansion is the same restrictive pattern the NWT applies to John 12:32 ("draw all sorts of men"); the effect is to narrow the Spirit's universal outpouring into a "various-kinds-of-people" claim that fits a JW two-tier anthropology — full Spirit-indwelling for the 144,000, partial influence for the rest. Lowercase "spirit" coheres with the Watchtower's depersonalisation of the Spirit elsewhere.

## Arguments Using This Verse

- [Call Upon the Name of the Lord Jesus](https://jw-apologetics.app/arguments/call-upon-name.md) — The OT worship phrase applied to Jesus [Deity of Christ]
- [The Last Days Began at Pentecost, Not 1914](https://jw-apologetics.app/arguments/last-days-pentecost.md) — Acts 2:16-17 — 'This is what was spoken through the prophet Joel' [Eschatology]
