# James 5:16

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man has great power to prevail.

## NWT Wording of the Key Phrase

- NWT (2013 revision): "Therefore, openly confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, so that you may be healed."

## JW Usage

JWs read James 5:16 within the elder-confession framework: when a baptised member commits a serious sin, the loving response is to "call the elders" (verse 14) and confess so that judicial process can begin. The verse is treated as part of the same confessional architecture that produces the judicial committee — confession upward to appointed men who can determine repentance and apply reproof or removal. JWs also rightly note this is not Roman auricular confession; it is, in their framing, a brotherly arrangement under Jehovah's organisation. The rhetorical weight typically lands on confessing "to" elders, with mutuality minimised.

## Protestant Usage

The verb is reciprocal: confess your sins to one another. The grammar is mutual, not hierarchical — brothers in Christ confessing to brothers in Christ for the express purpose of healing. James does not say "confess your sins to a panel of three appointed elders for adjudication"; he says confess and pray with one another so that you may be healed. On the doorstep, set this verse beside 1 John 1:9 (forgiveness flows directly from the Father through Christ) and Galatians 6:1 (restore in gentleness, with self-suspicion). The Christian whose brother is fighting sin gets to be a fellow sinner with him — a posture incompatible with a tribunal model. Use this verse to invite your friend to imagine confessing a struggle to a trusted Christian brother and being prayed for, rather than charged. The contrast — healing vs classification — does its own work.
