# James 5:1

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> Come now, you who are rich, weep and wail over the misery to come upon you.

## JW Usage

The Watchtower applies James 5:1-6 to wealthy clergy and televangelists outside the organisation — Kenneth Copeland's private jets, Joel Osteen's mansion, the prosperity gospel as a whole. Inside the organisation the same passage is treated as inapplicable on the grounds that JWs have no paid clergy and elders serve unpaid. The verse therefore functions as a one-way mirror: a warning that always points outward.

## Protestant Usage

Confessional Protestants — Reformed, Lutheran, Anglican, Baptist — have said the same things about the prosperity gospel for decades. James 5:1 is a scandal text against any movement that accumulates wealth through the labour of others while claiming to serve God, and the test cuts in every direction. Unpaid local elders and an extraction model at the top can coexist; James 5 cares about how wealth is gathered, what is done with it, and whose voice is suppressed in the gathering. Pair the verse with Mark 10:25 and 1 Timothy 6:9-10 and ask the doorstep question honestly: which movement of any size has ever publicly named a financial error and repented of it? The honest test is not who is perfect — it is who can be corrected.
