# James 3:1

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers, because you know that we who teach will be judged more strictly.

## NWT Wording of the Key Phrase

- NWT (2013 revision): "Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers, knowing that we will receive heavier judgment."

## JW Usage

JWs read James 3:1 as a sober warning to those who would seek teaching privileges in the congregation — elders, ministerial servants, regular pioneers, those giving public talks. The verse encourages a culture of caution about taking on teaching responsibility, which matches the JW emphasis on humility before Jehovah's organisation. It is also occasionally cited against outsiders who teach contrary doctrine — the heavier judgment is held to fall on those teaching in opposition to the channel of communication.

## Protestant Usage

James warns that teachers of God's word will be held to a stricter standard — not because teaching is forbidden, but because words spoken in God's name carry weight that mishandling them cannot recover. On the doorstep, this verse cuts both directions, and honest application requires we apply it to ourselves first. Christians teaching about the Trinity, the deity of Christ, or the authority of scripture must speak carefully and check their own hearts. But the same verse also asks the Witness to consider what judgment falls on teachers whose published predictions repeatedly failed (1914 expectations of the rapture, 1925 expectations of resurrection of the patriarchs, 1975 expectations of the millennium), whose authority claims have shifted from "channel of communication" in print to "presumptuous to claim that" under oath at the Australian Royal Commission in 2015. Pair with Matthew 5:33-37 (let your yes be yes) and 1 Timothy 3:1-7 (overseer must be above reproach). The point is not to weaponise the verse but to ask which teachers actually pass James' threshold.
