James 2:20
James 2:2020O foolish man, do you want evidence that faith without deeds is worthless?
Cited alongside 2:24 and 2:26 as a chain — "faith without works is useless" / "is dead" — to argue that the Reformed "faith alone" formula is not just unbiblical but anti-biblical. The Watchtower frames the verse as proof that faith plus organisationally-sanctioned works (preaching, meeting attendance, Memorial observance, baptism into the organisation) is the only kind of faith that saves.
The Greek word James uses is argē — idle, inoperative, barren. The contrast is alive-versus-dead, not insufficient-versus-sufficient. Real faith is alive and therefore productive; counterfeit faith is dead and therefore inert. makes the point unmistakable: the demons "believe and shudder" — they have correct theology and produce nothing, because their assent is not living trust. The Reformers rejected exactly the same kind of faith James rejects here: bare intellectual assent without love or surrender. What they affirmed — and what James affirms — is the living faith that naturally produces fruit because it is alive, not because the fruit completes a deficient faith into a sufficient one.
