# James 2:19

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> You believe that God is one. Good for you! Even the demons believe that—and shudder.

## JW Usage

Jehovah's Witnesses use "even the demons believe — and shudder" to argue that bare belief is insufficient for salvation. Since demons have faith in God's existence yet remain condemned, human faith must be supplemented by works to have saving value. The verse is deployed against the Protestant doctrine of sola fide: if demons can believe and still be lost, then faith alone cannot save anyone.

## Protestant Usage

James 2:19 is not attacking faith alone as the Reformers define it — it is attacking "mental assent alone," which the Reformers equally reject. The demons have intellectual knowledge that God is one. They acknowledge facts about God. But they do not love God, trust God, or surrender to Christ as Lord. Saving faith is categorically different from demonic acknowledgment: it is a living trust that rests in Christ and produces transformation. The very inadequacy of demonic belief proves the Protestant point — real faith is not mere agreement with propositions but a personal relationship of trust and surrender. James's example also has Christological force: in Peter's confession (Matthew 16:16), recognising Jesus as "the Son of the living God" was revealed by the Father himself. Even the demons called Jesus "Son of God" — and they trembled, because they recognised the authority behind the title. The question James raises is not "do you have enough works?" but "do you have the right kind of faith?"
