# James 2:18

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> But someone will say, “You have faith and I have deeds.” Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by my deeds.

## JW Usage

Used as the lead-in to James 2:24 to argue that works and faith are equally necessary for salvation: the imaginary interlocutor's "show me your faith apart from your works" is read as proof that faith without an attached works-record is empty. Combined with the Watchtower's reporting culture — hours, return visits, Bible studies, baptismal certificates — the verse becomes a charter for measuring discipleship by activity logs.

## Protestant Usage

James 2:18 is the controlling verse for the whole "not by faith alone" passage and it is framed by the verb deiknymi — to show, demonstrate, display. The whole question is evidential, not forensic: how can outsiders tell whose faith is real? James's answer is "by what it produces." That is exactly what the Reformers meant by living faith. The faith Paul says saves apart from works (Romans 3:28; Galatians 2:16) is the same faith James says will visibly produce works. Paul asks "what grounds our right standing before God?" — the answer is faith. James asks "how do we tell whose faith is real?" — the answer is works. Different questions, same saving faith.
