# James 2:17

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> So too, faith by itself, if it does not result in action, is dead.

## JW Usage

Jehovah's Witnesses cite "faith, if it does not have works, is dead in itself" as a primary proof text that works are required alongside faith for salvation. The Watchtower reads James as directly contradicting the Protestant doctrine of justification by faith alone. Works — including field service, meeting attendance, and organisational loyalty — are presented as essential components of saving faith, not optional extras. Without them, faith is insufficient and the person remains unjustified.

## Protestant Usage

James 2:17 asks "what does genuine faith look like?" not "how do you get saved?" The controlling question is set in 2:18: "Show me your faith apart from your works, and I will show you my faith by my works." The whole passage is framed by the word "show" (deiknymi) — demonstrate, display. Dead faith is not faith that lacks supplementary works; it is faith that was never alive — mere intellectual assent without trust or love. Ephesians 2:8-10 gives the order: saved BY grace THROUGH faith, created FOR good works. Works are the fruit of salvation, not the root. Paul and James are answering different questions: Paul asks what grounds our right standing before God (answer: faith); James asks how we tell whose faith is real (answer: works, the visible fruit). Both apostles are right because they are not answering the same question. A tree produces fruit because it is alive — fruit does not make it alive.
