# Isaiah 63:16

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> Yet You are our Father, though Abraham does not know us and Israel does not acknowledge us. You, O LORD, are our Father; our Redeemer from Everlasting is Your name.

## JW Usage

"You are our Father; though Abraham did not know us and Israel did not recognise us, you, O Jehovah, are our Father. Our Repurchaser is your name from of old" (NWT, paraphrased). The Watchtower reads Isaiah 63:16 as a strong assertion of Jehovah as the unique Father of his people — a Father from of old, the Repurchaser. The verse is rarely connected to Trinitarian Christology because the Watchtower system reserves the title "Father" exclusively for the Father.

## Protestant Usage

The Father-name in Isaiah 63:16 is Jehovah's. The New Testament applies the Repurchaser/Redeemer title — the second part of the same verse — to Jesus (Galatians 3:13: "Christ purchased us from the curse of the Law"; Titus 2:14: Jesus "gave himself for us, that he might deliver us from every kind of lawlessness and cleanse for himself a people"). Pair with Genesis 5:2 (one name shared by two persons sharing a nature) and Isaiah 9:6 ("Eternal Father" applied to the Messianic son). The unified Old Testament Father/Redeemer figure is, in the New Testament, manifested as Father and Son — sharing the divine nature, distinct in person. The doorstep form: "Isaiah 63:16 says Jehovah's name is 'our Repurchaser from of old.' Galatians 3:13 says Christ repurchased us. The Repurchaser of Isaiah is the Christ of Galatians."
