# Isaiah 6:1

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord seated on a throne, high and exalted; and the train of His robe filled the temple.

## JW Usage

Jehovah's Witnesses accept that Isaiah 6:1 describes a vision of Jehovah seated on his throne in heavenly glory. The Watchtower treats this as a vision of the Father alone, reinforcing the view that Jehovah is a single divine person distinct from Jesus. When confronted with John 12:41 — where the apostle John says Isaiah "saw his glory and spoke about him" and the "him" is Jesus — JWs typically argue that Isaiah glimpsed Jesus' future glory or that Jesus was present as Jehovah's chief representative. These explanations introduce a secondary figure the text does not mention.

## Protestant Usage

The decisive cross-reference is John 12:41. After quoting Isaiah 6:10, John writes that Isaiah "said these things because he saw his glory and spoke about him" — and the "him" in context is unmistakably Jesus (John 12:37-40). Isaiah saw Jehovah on his throne; John says Isaiah was looking at Jesus' glory. The identification is straightforward: the Jehovah of Isaiah 6 is identified by the inspired apostle as Jesus. This is confirmed by jw.org's own cross-reference footnote on John 12:40, which links directly to Isaiah 6:10, placing both passages in the same context. The conclusion is unavoidable without inserting a voice change or secondary figure that neither text mentions. Combined with Jeremiah 23:6 (the Messiah called "Jehovah Is Our Righteousness") and the Genesis 5:2 principle of shared name indicating shared nature, this passage forms part of the Old Testament evidence for plurality within the one God.
