# Isaiah 52:11

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> Depart, depart, go out from there! Touch no unclean thing; come out from it, purify yourselves, you who carry the vessels of the LORD.

## JW Usage

"Turn away! Turn away! Get out of there, touch nothing unclean!" Isaiah 52:11 (quoted in 2 Corinthians 6:17) is the Watchtower's separation-from-the-world charter. JWs apply it broadly to cultural participation — refusing holidays, blood transfusions, political involvement, military service, and association with former members. The "touch nothing unclean" command is read as a prohibition against any object or practice with non-JW associations.

## Protestant Usage

Isaiah 52:11 in its original context is a literal departure from Babylon — exilic priests carrying back the temple vessels are told to remain ritually clean for that journey. Paul's application at 2 Corinthians 6:17 is to spiritual separation from idolatry and unbelieving partnerships, not a wholesale withdrawal from culture. The Watchtower's extension of the verse to forbid Christmas trees, birthdays, blood transfusions, political voting, higher education, and contact with former members applies the principle far beyond what either Isaiah or Paul intended. Pair with 1 Corinthians 5:9-10 (Paul: "I did not mean for you to mix in company with the immoral people of this world; otherwise, you would actually have to get out of the world"). Christian separation is from sin and unbelief, not from the cultural environment in which the gospel must be lived out and proclaimed.
