# Isaiah 45:7

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> I form the light and create the darkness; I bring prosperity and create calamity. I, the LORD, do all these things.

## NWT Wording of the Key Phrase

- NWT (2013 revision): "I form light and create darkness, I make peace and create calamity; I, Jehovah, am doing all these things."

## JW Usage

The Watchtower's theodicy runs on the idea of permission rather than decree: Jehovah allowed Satan's rebellion and the suffering that followed, so that the question of his right to rule could be settled before all creation. Jehovah is never the author of calamity, only the one who permits it for a time. Verses like this one are therefore read narrowly — the calamity in view is judicial judgment on nations, not anything that would place adversity inside God's purposes.

## Protestant Usage

You are not trying to convert a Witness to a Reformed doctrine of providence at the doorstep. The useful move is narrower: ask what work the word "permitted" is doing in their own system. The Watchtower teaches that Jehovah foreknew Eden's outcome, foreknew the millennia of suffering that would follow, and chose to allow it because allowing it would settle the question more thoroughly than stopping it. Foreknowledge, plus ability to prevent, plus a chosen purpose for allowing — in ordinary English that is not bare permission. It is a decision. Then read this verse, and Job 1:12 where Satan can act only after Jehovah's explicit grant, and Acts 4:27-28 in their NWT, where what Herod and Pilate did to Jesus is what God's "hand and counsel had determined beforehand to occur." The cross was not permitted; it was determined, and the men who carried it out acted freely. That is the structure the Watchtower says it rejects, sitting in their own Bible. Compare Job 1:12, Acts 4:27, Romans 9:18.
