# Isaiah 44:9

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> All makers of idols are nothing, and the things they treasure are worthless. Their witnesses fail to see or comprehend, so they are put to shame.

## JW Usage

Isaiah 44:9 — "the makers of carved images are nothing, and their precious things will bring no benefit" — is read by the Watchtower as a general condemnation of idolatry that authorises the organisation's blanket prohibition of any object connected to pagan origins: the cross, Christmas trees, Easter eggs, Halloween imagery, even (in some teaching) wedding rings. The verse is paired with Jeremiah 10:3-4 to create a single anti-decoration framework.

## Protestant Usage

Isaiah 44:9 must be read in its actual context: 44:9-20 is a detailed mockery of *cult-statue manufacture*. The same craftsman takes wood, burns half to cook with, and bows down to the other half he carved into a god (44:14-17). The object Isaiah ridicules is a worshipped image with feet that cannot walk, eyes that cannot see, and a mouth that cannot speak — the same Babylonian cult statue Jeremiah 10:3-15 also describes. The Watchtower's extension of this prohibition to twenty-first-century customs with no surviving cultic context (Christmas trees, evergreen decoration, wedding rings) is a category error. 1 Corinthians 8:4 settles the question for the New Testament: "we know that an idol is nothing in the world." Pagan associations dissolve once the cult that animated them is gone — the same principle the Watchtower applies to days of the week (Sunday/sun-god, Wednesday/Woden) without controversy.
