JW Usage

— "I, I am the One who is blotting out your transgressions for my own sake, and I will not remember your sins" (NWT) — is read by JWs as Jehovah's promise of forgiveness to repentant Israel. The verse is occasionally cited in Watchtower studies on repentance, but the implications for forgiveness as a completed act (rather than an ongoing conditional grant) are not engaged.

Protestant Usage

The Septuagint of uses the verb exaleiphō ("blot out") — the same verb Paul deploys at : God "erased the handwritten document that consisted of decrees and was in opposition to us." Paul treats the cross as the cosmic enactment of 's blotting-out — and the cancellation is "for my own sake," not because of human merit. Pair with ("their sins I will remember no more") and (its New Testament citation). The blot-out language rules out any framework that treats forgiveness as continually re-earned through ongoing organisational service. The debt is not refinanced; it is erased.
