# Isaiah 12:2

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> Surely God is my salvation; I will trust and not be afraid. For the LORD GOD is my strength and my song, and He also has become my salvation.”

## JW Usage

Isaiah 12:2 is one of the verses Watchtower literature uses to support the exclusive-Jehovah-name claim — "only Jehovah's Witnesses use Jehovah's name." The "Jah Jehovah" doublet here (preserved in the NWT) is treated as evidence that the divine name is woven into Hebrew worship and that any community refusing to use it has departed from biblical practice.

## Protestant Usage

The exclusive-name claim collapses on inspection: the King James Version uses "Jehovah" at Exodus 6:3, Psalm 83:18, Isaiah 12:2, and Isaiah 26:4; Reformed confessions use it; the hymn "Guide Me O Thou Great Jehovah" (William Williams, 1745) is a Welsh Methodist hymn sung universally in Protestant worship. The deeper observation in Isaiah 12:2 is the wordplay: the Hebrew yeshu'ah ("salvation") shares its root with Yeshua — Jesus's Hebrew name. "He has become my yeshu'ah" reads, in the New Testament's light, as "he has become my Jesus." Pair with Matthew 1:21 ("you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save") and Acts 4:12 ("there is no salvation in anyone else, for there is no other name under heaven... by which we must be saved"). The salvation Isaiah names in 12:2 is the salvation embodied in Jesus.
